MOTOR KITS & SEAL KITS
Shaft seal leaks may occur for several common reasons:
- The shaft seal may be worn out.
- The shaft might have grooves worn into the sealing area.
- The motor could be worn out creating excessive leakage.
- The case pressure could be too high.
- Typically, motor shaft seals are low pressure and excessive internal case pressure can cause the shaft seal to fail.
If the motor has a drain line it should be connected.
However, using the drain line may not be required when a motor operates in only one direction, or hasvery little return line back pressure.
The hydraulic fluid is pumped through the inlet and supplies the piston motor, but the case does not receive sufficient lubrication atstart-up.
If the case is not filled with fluid a dry start-up will cause damage to the rotating parts inside the motor.
The drain line must be mounted to ensure fluid does not drain from the unit when not in use.
PUMP KITS & SEAL KITS
The shaft seal may leak for a few different reasons:
- The shaft seal may be worn out.
- The shaft might have grooves worn into the sealing area.
- The pump could be worn out creating excessive leakage.
- The case pressure could be too high.
- Typically, shaft seals are low pressure and excessive internal pump pressure can cause the shaft seal to fail.
Piston pumps and vane pumps use drains to circulate fluid through internal moving and rotating parts.
The fluid inside the case lubricates moving parts, the shaft seal, and bearing to helpreduce heat generated from internal leakage.
In some instances, seals can wear out and/or fail.
Replacing pump seals may extend the service life of the pump.
When servicing a pump, internal wear and bearing life are factors in determining what should be replaced.
VALVE KITS & SEAL KITS
The end of a valve spool is typically sealed with an o-ring or a quad ring, sometimes a Teflon back up maybe included.
Directional valves are usually designed so that inside valve spool ends are positioned in close proximityto the return or low-pressure connections of the valve.
If there is high pressure in the tank line, or if valves are connected in a series it may create pressure that exceeds the sealing ability of the o-rings.
It is uncommon to replace or rebuild a valve without removing it from machine.
Many directional control valves are made with multiple sections and use seals in between each section.
Caution must be taken while servicing to ensure dirt and other contaminations do not come in contact with the valve sections.
The spools can be replaced and should be inspected for wear and abnormalities when removed.
Valve spools are typically honed and match fit to the bore housing for a very tight tolerance.
Valve Spools can be difficult to remove and replace. They largely do not require an internal seal due to the tight tolerance. Spools are not generally used for load holding applications because the do leak internally.
CYLINDER SEAL KITS, JACK SEAL KITS, & RAM SEAL KITS
Some rod seals have the ability to be adjusted in some cylinders.
Over tightening a rod seal can damage the chrome rod and/or restrict movement.
Caution and care is recommended.
Examine the cylinder rod closely while servicing and replaced or service if worn, rough, or pitted.
Yes, rod seals can be removed and replaced in some cases while the cylinder remains mounted on the machine. However, if the rod has a welded mount, the cylinder will need to be removed and disassembled.
If piston seals are damaged, worn, or the cylinder bore is defective it will allow internal fluid LEAKAGE past the piston. This condition will allow the rod to either extend or retract.
High back pressure on a directional valve can cause cylinder leakage and could contribute to cylinder movement.
O RING KITS & SEAL KITS
There are many different o-rings for various applications. Below are several basic categories to consider, but not limited to:
- Material and fluid compatibility in hydraulic system.
- Operating system and ambient temperatures
- Durometer of o-ring
Proper o-ring selection is dependent on equipment type and application.
Do our o-ring repair kits meet or exceed SAE standards for hydraulic adapters, caterpillar d-rings, and flat face seal adapters.
